Soul Daddy

A Safe Place
Self-released

Hip-hop is all about flow — and that's precisely what much of A Safe Place lacks. Granted, there are plenty of positive elements here. The sound is warm and open-ended, and supplemental singers Bianca Mikahn and Kiev Nubine add a beguiling flavor to standout tracks like "MOVE!" and "Blame U." If only Soul Daddy's vocals were more persuasive. He comes from a spoken-word background, so it's no surprise that his lyrics are smart. But his delivery is monotonous and clunky, especially in comparison with the work of Jean Grae, who guests on "No Drank." As for Slum Village's Elzhi, he sounds so fine on "Switch" that most listeners will be left wishing he was on every cut instead of just one. That's the way it flows.

Hey, I'm from Philly, so I don't get to read your paper. After hearing Soul Daddy on my fave Philly hip-hop show, I bought Soul Daddy's CD on I-Tunes. It's the hotness! And we been rocking it steadily for weeks (especially my damn girl!) She googled Soul Daddy, and we found your paper's music review on him. I gotta say, Michael Roberts must have had a stroke when he reviewed it. Here we got: 1. one of the most intelligent rappers repping your state on a local level, 2. with music that easily touches the radio and moves his listeners (in the credits, music mostly done by Soul Daddy). In his review, Roberts agrees on BOTH these points, but can only acknowledge them begrudgingly and backhandedly, as if the fact that Soul Daddy is popular here in Philly and other places is some threat to him. Do you not want him to be popular in your hometown? What's the problem, Mr. Roberts? Why are you so bitter that you attack the efforts of emcees in your hometown? Maybe some rapping kid with a deep voice used to beat you up in high school, and Soul Daddy 's style gave you flashbacks? Come on, Mr. Roberts, you can't begin the healing until you admit there's a problem. Hey, I might not have all the details, but I'm pushing for counseling before your next review. I will send you my psychotherapist.!
