Spring Forward

The Colorado Folk Arts Council does multicultural right.

Last year, the Colorado Folk Arts Council had a dream: to host a series of free multicultural performances in Aurora, which has the fastest-growing Hispanic population in the metro area, and to schedule them between Día de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo, during the day, mid-week, so that schools could incorporate them into their curriculum. And the council has managed to make that dream a reality, offering one program a month since November.

March’s offering, Festival of Holi, With Dances From India, celebrates spring, welcoming longer days and reveling in the waning of winter’s grip on the hemisphere. In a display of excellent timing, it runs from noon to 1 p.m. today — just before the vernal equinox, otherwise known as the official arrival of spring, which takes place at 11:44 a.m. Universal Time on March 20. Led by director and India native Namita Khanna Nariani, members of the Mudra Dance Studio will present an innovative version of Bharathanatyam, an ancient dance considered one of India’s oldest art forms. Spring is in the air! Seating at the Aurora Fox Theater, 9900 East Colfax Avenue, is on a first-come, first-served basis; for more information, call 720-329-0869 or visit http://colofolkarts.org.
