Imagine being born on the same day as the woman you’re destined to marry, in beds directly across from each other, in the same room, in a small village hidden away in the high desert. Imagine that your young sweetheart’s grandmother has given you the perfect celestial moment for your first time as man and wife, during which you will feel weightless, as if you are flying — but there’s a catch: You must both bathe beforehand.

Now imagine that the town’s one source of water spews from a rickety and rusted old pipe used only for drinking, and there is no bathing opportunity at all. Where are you? You’re in Absurdistan, a whimsical comedic romance film out of Germany (Russian with English subtitles), which opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli. Tickets are $6 to $9.50; visit www.denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456.
