Lotsa Lucha

The universal appeal of larger-than-life masked men engaged in an epic battle of good versus evil is brilliantly manifested in Mexico’s lucha libre tradition. Its history and rivalries cross generations, inspiring fierce loyalties among its devotees. But lacking such a background is no handicap to becoming a fan. “For me, it doesn’t change the experience,” explains promoter Sid Pink. “It’s like, ‘Wow, these guys are throwing each other, going off the top rope and screaming. They have these great masks, and the energy there is really good.’ I think the appeal for the uninitiated is different, but the event can be just as enjoyable for different reasons. There’s all this stuff on the Nacho Libre side of it. It’s kitsch, camp, it’s strange, the idea of it’s funny.”
