Irepress

Saturday, April 4, 3 Kings Tavern, 303-777-7352.

On its latest album, Boston progophiles Irepress (say "ear press") frequently wander beyond the seven-minute mark, exploring atmospheric, intricate and even jazzy approaches to heavy metal. These folks clearly aren't interested in mindless headbanging and devil horns, so traditional metalheads might find the group's adventures (tech-house beats?! a piano solo?!) a little too, um, experi-metal. However, Sol I Sea I also includes plenty of bludgeoning riffs and blistering rock. It just seems as if these Beantown rockers get bored easily and are too musically skilled to color within the safe lines of a genre. If there were any justice in the world, this would be the band that finally brings together fans of Sigur Rós and Slayer, Battles and Black Sabbath, Widespread Panic and Pantera. On second thought, that might not be such a good idea.
