If noshing on some gluten-based seitan buffalo wings or sipping a vegan chocolate shake sounds nutritious, delicious and earth-friendly, then head down to today's Denver VegFest and Health Expo presented by the Vegetarian Society of Colorado.

“The Society's focus is on three areas: health, sustainability and compassion,” says CJ Eliassen, director of VegFest. “We try to educate people about the health aspect of vegetarianism — doing less damage to the environment and showing compassion toward animals.”

This year's expo features more than eighty vendors — Vitamin Cottage, WaterCourse Foods, the all-vegan boutique Ahimsa Footwear and Sweet Action Ice Cream among them — along with non-profit organizations and health and fitness booths. Panzano restaurant and several local chefs will give vegan cooking demonstrations (with samples, of course), and ten speakers — including Shaun Monson, director of the documentary film Earthlings, about human dependence on animals — will present throughout the day,.

Admission is $10 and includes the expo from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a concert featuring Nellie McKay, Sunyatta and Amy & the Rock Sisters from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Denver Marriott City Center ballroom, 1701 California Street. For more information, visit www.denvervegfest.com or call 303-777-4828.
