Poetic Justice

Poets meet on common ground at the Dikeou Collection.

It ain’t easy being a poet, no matter where you live — a fact of life that L.A. poet Sarah Suzor and her creative cohorts, Lizzy Epstein and Polly Geller, had to find out the hard way once the protective arms of college life gave way to the real world. But the trio of emerging versifiers decided to do something about it. “We discovered there was no real forum for emerging writers to get their work out to a larger crowd,” Suzor says. So they came up with a format to help remedy the problem — juxtaposing three established poets with three unknown ones for an informal reading — and 3 + 3 Poetry was born.

The three women, who hope to build the series into a touring, nationwide phenomenon, bring their show on the road to Denver (just in time for National Poetry Month) to the Dikeou Collection, on the fifth floor of the Colorado Building, at 1615 California Street.

Recognized Colorado bards Bin Ramke, Elizabeth Robinson and Selah Robinson will share the spotlight with up-and-comers Nate Jordon, Anne Heide and Richard Froude today at 3 p.m., but don’t expect a stuffy crowd. “It’s not a four-hour knock-down, dragged-out poetry reading,” Suzor promises. “It’s more about bringing together a community of poets who might not otherwise meet for many years.” In addition, a collaborative chapbook by the six poets will be available during the event.
