Grease is the Word

Sing along with Sandy.

For their first date, my dad took my mom, whose name is Sandy, to the drive-in to see Grease. The movie was a constant in my house. I watched it during every sleepover and listened to the soundtrack while I rollerskated in my basement. I’m pretty sure I knew every line – of dialogue as well as lyrics – by the time I was old enough to speak. As a six-year-old, I was playing Olivia Newton-John as Sandy, singing, “You better shape up, ’cause I need a man!” into a hairbrush in the bathroom mirror. And today I can’t think of a better way to escape my grown-up reality than a Grease Sing-A-Long.

“We wanted to just make an evening of fun,” says Denise Link, marketing director for the Colorado Chautauqua Association, which will host tonight’s sing-along. “These are such interesting times we are living in…. I think a lot of people are looking for a little bit of a break, an affordable break.”

If there’s anybody out there who doesn’t already know the words (and shame on them!), the lyrics will appear on the screen. Pink Lady and T-Bird costumes are optional, and you’re free to dance, should the mood strike. The movie starts at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Community House, 900 Baseline Road in Boulder; tickets are $8, $4 for association members. For more information, go to www.chautauqua.com.
