Not So Heavy

Spinal Tap returns in Unwigged and Unplugged.

The men of Spinal TapChristopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer — have been walking the fine line between clever and stupid for 25 years. Now, in the finest tradition of KISS without makeup and countless MTV Unplugged appearances by hair-metal bands, the trio is mounting a thirty-city tour, Unwigged and Unplugged. Sure, the amplification will not go up to eleven — a reasonable four and a half is probably more realistic — and the hair will be much less elaborate, but the camaraderie and chemistry that powered their past collaborations will be in full effect.

You’ll hear Spinal Tap favorites from the original film and the 1992 studio album, plus selections from the trio’s other musical mockumentary, the folk-skewering A Mighty Wind, in all new ways. It’s not just the never-heard-before acoustic versions, either; the arrangements are full of unusual twists such as the funked-up “Sex Farm,” complete with beatbox rhythms. No characters, no costumes, no undersized Stonehenge props — just three funny, talented guys playing a host of favorite tunes and hanging out in a relaxed setting.

See it tonight in Denver at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets for the all-ages show range from $39.50 to $55, depending on seat location. Buy tickets at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park box office, any metro-area Dick’s Sporting Goods store, online at www.tickethorse.com or by phone at 1-866-461-6556.
