Sex Machines

When Hungarian artist/photographer Agnes Vigil married an American, she struggled with a lot of what came out of his mouth. “Let’s just say he had a colorful vocabulary,” she says. “He would use slang and sexual phrases, and I would think, ‘Now, what does that mean?’” Once explained, a lot of it — “choking the chicken,” “carpet muncher” and the like — sounded downright hilarious to her. And when she formulated the images in her mind, her unique, if somewhat salacious, creative oeuvre came about.

Vigil’s artistic double entendres manifest themselves in various ways, but mostly as photographs; some characterize the idea of conception with the image of an egg surrounded by Goldfish crackers, while others are literal depictions of slang phrases or sexy images from nature. But her latest joke on sex, Dugibots: The Next Evolution in Sexual Satisfaction, on view at Edge Gallery, 3658 Navajo Street, is a collection of tiles, each printed with a different lascivious cartoon robot designed with a singular purpose in mind. These, gentle friends, are ’bots with tongues in all the right places, but just take ’em with a grain of salt.
