Lazer Sword

Just like that Mexican flu took DNA from pigs, birds and people and cooked it up into a wholly new and highly infectious mix, San Francisco’s Lazer Sword has swiped bits and pieces from hip-hop, electro, drum and bass (and pretty much anything else the band could lay its hands on) to create a new style that’s catchy as hell. Working in a style similar to that of fellow West Coasters the Glitch Mob, the two men of Lazer Sword — Bryant Rutledge and Antaeus Roy, both former XLR8R staffers turned electronic wizards — still manage to carve out a thoroughly distinctive sound. Their remixes and original works fuse shards of electro and glitch to hip-hop beats and sci-fi samples for a sound that reflects the past while looking to the future. As DJs, they apply the same anything-goes aesthetic, and the results find Dr. Dre nestled up to the likes of Modeselektor and Sebastian Tellier in a way that somehow sounds not just natural, but inevitable. See them Thursday, May 7, at the b.side lounge in Boulder.
