A Creative Class

Join Denver Open Media for a discussion of culture.

Who owns our culture? Should ideas and creations be locked into gilded cages to maximize profit, or set free to breed strange new forms? That’s the central question in RIP: A Remix Manifesto, screening tonight at Denver Open Media. The film centers on the work of Gregg Gillis, the sample-mashing, one-man dance band better known as Girl Talk and offers perspectives by Creative Commons founder Larry Lessig, Brazilian musician and former Minister of Cultural Affairs Gilberto Gil and sci-fi author/cultural commentator Cory Doctorow, among others.

“The film is all about remix culture and the ideas of sharing the work you create,” explains Tony Shawcross, executive director of Denver Open Media, “and how absurd it is that if you write a book and you quote another author, that’s commonplace, but in video, if you were to quote other videos by including them in your piece, it can be considered criminal.”

The screening starts at 8 p.m. at Denver Open Media, 700 Kalamath Street. The suggested donation is $5, but no one will be turned away. Come early — doors open at 7 p.m. — for cheap beer, DVD giveaways and a talk on Creative Commons; stay late for a performance by video artists Section 9.
