Talk about an unlikely combination. The meditative sounds of Iron and Wine, driven by the earnest lyrics and Travis picking of frontman Sam Beam, usually make for a calm and staid live performance. Comedy, meanwhile, plays a central role in the music of Flight of the Conchords, whose shows boast a higher energy and tend to attract a boisterous crowd. Seeing the two bands co-headlining a show at Red Rocks promises an evening of opposing and intriguing dynamics. The Conchords' second and final season on HBO yielded some of their most mature and creative music to date, while Iron and Wine's new release, Around the Well, boasts two discs of unreleased and rare material marked by Beam's poignant words and measured acoustic riffs. The resulting mixture of sounds and fans could make this show much more than the sum of its parts.
