The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center has the neatest way of pulling things together for an exhibition: Blessed with a surfeit of exhibit spaces both intimate and grand, the venue simply cries out for the type of interrelated curating for which former director Jina Pierce and current director Karin Larkin have become famous over the years.

This year's seven summer shows, exhibited under the aegis of Warhol & Friends: Famous Artists to See Before You Die, focus on contemporary and popular art and feature works by artists both internationally known (The Warhol Experience, An Adventure in the Arts) and closer to home (Colorado Moderns). From the most recognizable names — Warhol, Lichtenstein and Pollock among them — to such Colorado favorites as Vance Kirkland and Virginia Maitland, the smorgasbord of big and little shows deserves an entire afternoon of appreciative perusal.

Most of the shows continue through at least mid-August, but today’s the day if you really want to make your long drive south to Pueblo worthwhile: From 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., SDC-Arts will host a full day of events for all ages to celebrate the joint opening of Warhol and Friends and, in the adjoining Buell Children’s Museum, a hands-on free-for-all called The Big Messy Art Adventure. Entertainment throughout the day will include Dextre Tripp the Magician and Atom the World’s Fastest Painter, and refreshments will be served.
