The success of Slumdog Millionaire has kicked off a minor craze for the extravagant and colorful musical-film industry of India. If you’ve been bitten by the bug, then you’ll enjoy tonight’s Hooray for Bollywood fundraiser for Congregation Nevei Kodesh, with authentic Indian cuisine, dance instruction from Bollywood West, music from DJ AshishB, games for the kids, auctions and more.

Does it seem strange for Boulder Jews to be celebrating Bollywood? “We have a number of people in our community who are celebrating Hinduism, Buddhism and other Eastern philosophies, so we’ve embraced this,” says Douglas Scheffer, development director for CNK. Plus, while researching the culture for the event, Scheffer says, he discovered that many early Bollywood stars were of Jewish descent.

The party goes from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight at the Avalon Ballroom, 6185 Arapahoe Road in Boulder. Tickets are $40 ($10 for kids). For more info and tickets, visit www.neveikodesh.org or call 303-271-3540.
