Flower Power

This year’s spring rains have brought with them masses of flowers, sprouting up seemingly everywhere, even in sidewalk cracks. It’s quite a change from our normally parched environment, in which the blooms start to fade by early summer.

More flowers are blooming in town right now, if only metaphorically, in an impressive solo show, Robert Kushner Paintings & Works on Paper. The exhibit at the van Straaten Gallery, the flagship venue in the Santa Fe Art District, is a downright dazzling display of the artist’s modern take on these beloved wonders of nature.

Kushner is an internationally renowned contemporary artist with a career that stretches back over three decades. And flowers, it turns out, are his favorite subjects. His signature style simultaneously suggests traditional Japanese art in its composition and ’60s pop art in its execution. Kushner is also prone to employing broad bands of strong and vibrant colors and incorporating luxurious materials including gold and silver leaf.

The Kushner show is being unveiled on June 25 and will stay up through August 29 at the gallery, 760 Santa Fe Drive. For more information on the opening festivities, call 303-573-8585 or go to www.vanstraatengallery.com.
