Girls Rock!

As the father of a musically inclined young woman, I can say there just aren’t enough role models and opportunities to help encourage her to seize the day, rock-and-roll style. But now Girls Rock Denver is out to change that. “Girls Rock Denver is basically the first non-profit rock-and-roll day camp in town for girls. We’re run mostly by women; all of the instructors and workshop facilitators and everyone working directly with the girls are women,” says Monique Bourdage, the organization’s project director. “Our purpose is empowering girls through music.”

To help make sure the camp is a success, you can rock out tonight at 9 p.m. at A Benefit for Girls Rock Denver, at the hi-dive, 7 South Broadway. Local female rock stars B.Sous, Abi McGaha Miller and Ezmerelda are playing, and the Clockettes from Lannie’s Clocktower will perform burlesque. Tickets for the show are $8. The camp is still looking for musical instrument and equipment donations – everything from guitars to microphone cables – which can be dropped off at the Music Gear Guys store, 220 South Broadway. Or in a pinch, Bourdage says, you can just bring them along to the benefit and donate them there. And if you have a girl between eight and eighteen who is interested in the camp, applications are still open for guitar, bass and drums.
