To Market

Independent retailers fight back, with whimsy.

Downtown Littleton, like other urban retail pockets, has suffered in these economic times. While a few businesses have fallen by the wayside, it’s a good sign that they’ve been replaced by new ones – but the independents who form the backbone of the neighborhood, such as Peggy Cooper, of the long-lived Details Boutique, and Amy Dougherty, of the vintage store Pink Attic Cat, know that they need to keep drawing attention to the area. And so they came up with the al fresco Olde Town Market, which debuts July 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and continues on the second Saturday of every month through October, putting a combination of vendor booths and retail sidewalk tables along the street.

The market is striving to bring back some of the flavor that left when the Paris Street Market, which started out in downtown Littleton, moved to Aspen Grove – but don’t expect it to be a copycat. “It’s not necessarily a flea market,” notes Cooper. “Yes, there will be antiques, but we’ll also feature fine artisans, pottery, soaps and lotions and the like. We’re not expecting to get rich off of it; rather, we hope it will be a whimsical shopping experience meant to draw more business to downtown Littleton.”

Plan to make a day of it by shopping and then stopping for lunch at one of the area’s quaint eateries or tea shops; for more information, log on to www.oldetownmarket.com or call 720-999-4013.
Second Saturday of every month, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Starts: July 11. Continues through Oct. 10, 2009
