I must say that I disagree with this review. I like Broken Tongues style, especially now that they got a full band together. They killed it at Cervantes' opening for Chali 2na, and all of their other show have been really fun, with good crowds. I wonder if the author of this article actually listened to the whole album, because he calls it suburban rock rap hybrid, but is not really rock at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but at least listen to the album before you post something online that will never be taken off. This probably hurt your credibility as a journalist more than you hurt Broken Tongues.

You dumb. This album isn't even rock, is more jazz, funk, and experimental hip hop. Did you even listen to "Does Hip Hop remember the Jazz?" You probably one of those metro sexual hipsters that thinks they better than everyone just cuz they listen to lo fi indie rock and live in cap hill.

Informed Listener 10/15/2009 9:17:00 PM
This review is WAY OFF! I think the album's dope as hell and this reviewer didn't even listen! What a douche bag, piece of crap review. Thanks Westword for supporting Denver music!... if it ain't indy rock, bag it! Critics are supposed to be knowledgeable and provide a full understanding of a work to inform the unknowing public... this review does neither and instead insults something he doesn't know and didn't care to appreciate. Broken Tongues are my shit! Westword sucks a... Josh, you are lucky to be an intern. Your yellow journalism is pathetic.

Listen to the first two tracks and you will hear otherwise. This review is sh*t.

Greensleeves 07/13/2009 11:16:00 PM
Was that a review or a rant? Is this good journalism? Yellow journalism, perhaps?
Thanks for the love to those who've commented. We didn't like the review much either and thought that he only covered one song that he dismisses and then praises and then insults again. He also fails to mention the three instrumentals on the LP, the love song in where I spill my guts and that we are in fact, jazz-funk hip-hop, not rock-hip-hop. This basic knowledge of music theory escapes him and he doesn't even leave any of our basic info to let people decide for themselves. I for one think he should dismount his high-horse and get a clue! It sure is easy to judge others having done nothing like this yourself huh?... ah the great critic...
anyway, thanks again fam for the REAL Denver support. I'm gonna go brush my shoulders off and write some more moronic, bro-dawg, cliched lyrics now.

This author has no idea what he's talking about. When was the last time you saw a hip hop group that actually plays instruments live on stage (by which I mean a drum, guitar, bass, etc.)? Or can freestyle like lyrical geniuses instead of just memorizing what they've written down? Or emanate fun and positivity instead of just talking about how awesome they are (or bitches and money)? Broken Tongues does all of the above, which I definitely find refreshing.

I thought the album was good yo. Someone needs a hit of something good!

Not moronic, not cliche... Listen to the first track and you know this... it's a story with samples and it's so tight... my favorite from the disc. Turntablists where y'all at?!
There's also an instrumental called Royal Beasts that's iller than ill. I personally like the non-lyrical songs better, but that's not to say the MCs are bad. It's actually some of the best local stuff I've heard in a while. Greensleeves gives Johnny 5 a serious run for his money and the beats BANG! Props to Broken Tongues, forget about this unenlightened review and keep doin whatchya do.

Wow, this guy needs a hug and a writing lesson! Apparently when listening to Broken Tongues music your tongue actually breaks! I disagree with this review and thought the exact opposite of calling them suburban rap, etc... this comment makes me think of Kotton Mouth Kings or something and they are certainly not that - or even close. Besides, it's jazz and funk mainly, not rock. Hear for yourself tho cause everyone has opinions... obviously.
I think you guys did a great job and it flows well with the budding Denver music scene! Let the haters just keep hatin'!

Wow. I COMPLETELY disagree with this review. I think Broken Tongues is much more inventive, exciting, and unique than you give them credit for. I love this album and it is definitely NOT "hip-hop rock." You make 'em sound like they're Limp Bizkit or something. Not sure if this guy has a clue but if you're reading this DO NOT TAKE THIS REVIEW SERIOUSLY. They remind me of Flobots! I love it. "Does Hip-Hop Remember the Jazz" is hands down my fan fav! It's catchy and fun and I think the lyrics provide meaningful commentary on the problems with 'hip-pop.' "Rock" on BT! Haha!!

"prosaic"....also a good word for this review. A friend gave me a copy of Broken Tongue's latest release. They're no Digable Planets or Tribe Called Quest or anyting, but how about some respect for some local independent musicians who laid down some interesting tracks and great instrumentals. "Suburban rap" doesn't exist. Its a made up term used by egotistical music editors to make themselves fell good and creative, when in fact that they aren't creative enough to "make it" in music or as writers. I appreciate the fact BTs don't go the alternative route, and mimic sh!tty one dimensional urban rap. I've seen plenty of MCs who wish they were effing 50 cent rapping about hard times, b!tc#es, and blunts - when they're probably more Kanye college drop out wannbe's....in front of their "dj's" - who are just playing the same lame tracks off itunes or the equivalent on the tricked out turn tables they have no clue how to use. BTs offer solid a change of pace from that played out wiggidy wannabe BS. I give respect where it is due, and BTs, while not incredible, are a solid addition to the Denver scene. Thanks, Joshua, for another self-absorbed Westword review.
