Denver doesn't suck (Marion Barry's dick, that is)

You put me out in Denver because I wouldn't suck your dick."

That's what Donna Watts-Brighthaupt, a lobbyist hired last year by former D.C. mayor and current councilmember Marion Barry to be his driver and personal assistant, shouted at Barry in June — shortly before he was arrested and jailed on stalking charges.

Barry had brought Watts-Brighthaupt to Denver last August for the Democratic National Convention, and "for reasons that remain murky," reported the weekly Washington City Paper, she was booked to share a room with Barry at the downtown Crowne Plaza. But after she allegedly refused his request for a good dick-sucking, Barry threw her out of the hotel, and she had to sleep in his rented Cadillac in the hotel's parking garage, as she reported that night to her ex-husband.

"She called me from the garage," Delonta Brighthaupt told the paper, which put the "dick" quote on its cover last week and subsequently received a litany of complaints from locals.

But the complaint against Barry was dropped, and the former mayor is once again running free. "My heart is so heavy," Watts-Brighthaupt told the City Paper of the saga going public. "I worry mainly that I've disappointed my mom, family and people that I truly thought highly of."

And she didn't do much for Denver's reputation as a party town, either.

Wolverines! Hollywood is remaking Red Dawn, the hilariously frightening Cold War-era movie about a Soviet invasion of the United States and the group of Colorado high school students who fight back.

The original 1984 flick was the first to receive a PG-13 rating, and also marked the film debut of Charlie Sheen, who starred alongside Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey. In mid-June, MGM announced that it had already signed on Josh Peck (of Drake & Josh fame) as Matt Eckert (Sheen's role), as well as Adrianne Palicki (a regular on Friday Night Lights) and Chris Hemsworth (who played James Kirk's father in Star Trek).

Filming is set to begin in September, but probably not in Colorado – not that the original was shot here, either. Like many films set in the Centennial State, Red Dawn was actually shot in New Mexico — the town of Las Vegas, specifically.

Adding insult to injury, word has it that MGM may change the setting of this remake — leaving Colorado, and the fictional town of Calumet, completely shut out of the story line.

Scene and herd: Sol, on the other hand, has its firm butt cheeks planted squarely in Colorado. The upscale Cherry Creek North lingerie shop recently shot a new ad campaign in Buena Vista using all local talent and featuring the same model who's starred in the store's ads for the past four years. This one follows the Sol girl as she packs up her (expensive) unmentionables and heads off on a cross-state road trip, says store marketing director Janelle Kenny.

And customers will be able to take the Sol girl home with them — or at least a small piece of her likeness. The store is recycling its older billboards and window displays into reusable tote bags — in a practice that took root here after the DNC, when the Colorado History Museum converted convention banners into tote bags. (The museum gift shop now sells bags made from banners for a variety of art exhibits, sporting events and other around-town festivities.) Sol will give away 25 bags to big spenders at its annual sidewalk sale, which runs through July 19.

Sexy sells in America — as the City Paper already knows, and those Soviet invaders will surely find out.
