Salt of the Earth

What do surfing and Zen have in common? Well, nothing…and everything. To truly understand the connection, you’ll need to pick up a copy of Jaimal Nikos Yogis’s book Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer’s Quest to Find Zen on the Sea, which follows Yogis as he heads to Hawaii with a one-way ticket (purchased using his mom’s credit card), seeking peace on the waves. He surfs his way through Hawaii, San Francisco and even New York while simultaneously embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through monasteries in France and Berkeley. Saltwater Buddha begins with the words “Dear Family, Please do not worry. I am somewhere in the world and I will call you when I get there.” From that point forward, it’s all about Yogis’s journey toward the elusive “there.”

Join Yogis tonight at the Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street in Boulder, at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.boulderbookstore.com or call 303-447-1252 He’ll also read at the Tattered Cover Book Store, 2526 E. Colfax Avenue, at 7: 30 p.m. Thursday, August 6; go to www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-322-7727.
