The appropriately titled "Intro" begins this latest Vitamins album, sounding like it's going to be a work of ambient noise. Instead, it ramps up into one of the band's best songs, the bombastic and rocking "Big Bang." What is most impressive here is the seamless sequencing between tracks, as though the whole were a single piece even though each song couldn't be more different. A hypnotic post-disco bass line runs through "Sequined Dress," evolving into a type of no-wave funk, while "Dark Matter" cycles through moments of incandescent introspection and nostalgic euphoria. "Big Tears," meanwhile, is orchestral like Supertramp with better vocals, and the closer, "Annual Bi-Centennial," appropriates kraut rock into an indie-pop context. The dark vitality of this album is satisfying throughout.
