Erica Sodos displays her Power
Most stage magicians bank on flash and misdirection. But Boulder’s Erica Sodos has a passion for the art that runs far deeper. Weaving together wonder, mysticism and the almost mythic stature of magicians both modern and ancient, Sodos will bring her new show, The Power of Magic, to the b.side Lounge at 7 p.m. tonight (it’s part of her recently established monthly run at the popular Boulder nightclub). Everything from Chinese linking rings to mind-reading will be on display, and the audience may be pleasantly surprised by the strong yet subtle themes of feminism and theatricality that run through Sodos’s show, which also includes an appearance by the Hindu goddess Lakshmi (one of Sodos’s many dramatis personae). While there’s sure to be no shortage of sheer spectacle in Power, it’s Sodos’s respect for the intelligence of her crowds and the soul of her craft that will keep her from disappearing anytime soon.
