The Wheel Deal

Denver’s a bike town, and we’ve got every kind of biker under the sun: mountain bikers, road racers, cruisers, commuters, anarchic DIYers, pixie bike fanatics, baby-pullers and lots of kids with handlebar fringe flying. So when local bike advocate and cycling trade-show veteran Carol Johnson decided to promote a bike expo like no other, she made extra certain that all her constituents were covered. “I’m not out to make money,” she says. “This is an effort to serve the public, with a show that gives back to the entire bike community first and foremost, and one that the city can get behind.” The first Rocky Mountain Bicycle Show, a vehicle that Johnson hopes will develop into a destination event with a national profile, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the National Western Complex, I-70 and Brighton Boulevard. The show will include everything from a vendor area with bike manufacturers big and small to free sampling of local microbrews, films, art, memorabilia, a bicycle rodeo and the ArtBike! Kids Corner. “Our ultimate goal is to get more people on bicycles and have a gentler impact on the earth,” Johnson says.

But before getting down to that kind of business, the event gets rolling tonight with the ArtBike!/RMBS RockOut Party, a blowout (no, not that kind) featuring beer by Oskar Blues, a Fashion Denver bicycle fashion show, live music, DJs, art vendors, an Oakland Scraper Bike themed ride with the Denver Cruisers and more, from 7 to 11 p.m. at TAXI, the cool RiNo facility at 3455 Ringsby Court. Be there or be square.
