Color the Past

Yellow Rake releases a best-of compilation.

Every writer should have a friend like Brian Polk, creator of the local zine Yellow Rake. “It’s essentially in existence because a lot of my friends, even professional writers, didn’t have an avenue for creative writing,” Polk explains. “A lot of these people would write stories, and they’d just be writing for themselves, so it was my idea to create a zine to provide an outlet for that writing.”

The zine has become one of the most popular and prolific in the city, which has both good and bad points — good because people are clearly enjoying the publication, but bad because some of the earlier issues have quickly fallen out of circulation. “Throughout the years, I’ve had a lot of great writing and a lot of great writers submit their stories and poems,” Polk notes. “It just seemed like a shame that those zines weren’t still in circulation and still in print, so I figured if I put them in book form, it’s a way to present them again and conserve them.”

That book, The Best of the Yellow Rake, will be released with fanfare — and a party — tonight at 7 p.m. at the Larimer Lounge, 2721 Larimer Street. Admission is $8 — and bring your thinking caps: Partiers who can answer five trivia questions correctly will win copies of the book or other merchandise. Call 303-291-1007.
