DJ Sneak (due at Vinyl on Saturday, August 29) is an icon of second-wave Chicago house music. Coming up in the early '90s, his pioneering filter-disco style helped define a new sound for Chi-town, tied to the past but looking to the future. Some fifteen years later, Sneak has evolved into new territory, in part because of his friendship with minimal icon Ricardo Villalobos. When he goes into the studio these days, he's crafting a diverse, broad and deep style of energetic house that covers the ground from abstract, minimal-influenced tracks to classic, jacking house bangers. Whatever he's playing, his Chicago roots are apparent: It's always a little funky — except when it's a lot funky, as on his latest release, House of House. No matter what flavor of dance music tickles your fancy, it's hard not to find something to like on Sneak's latest record.
