The jam with which YMSB's music has been flavored since its 1998 founding is spread thinner than usual on The Show, a new album being given to attendees of a Friday, August 28, Red Rocks concert co-starring Xavier Rudd (August 27's Fox Theatre preview is sold out). Working again with producer Tom Rothrock, whose credit list includes Beck, the players squeeze thirteen songs into around an hour even though they could easily riff that long on one. And if cuts like "Complicated," with drums by Elvis Costello sideman Pete Thomas, constitute too-obvious crossover efforts, the irresistible "Criminal" and "Steep Grade, Sharp Curves" prove mighty roadworthy, and the love of traditional bluegrass that anchors these guys remains much in evidence on "Casualty," which clocks in at six minutes plus. Thank goodness.
