Different Stripes

When Fancy Tiger co-owners Matthew Brown and Jaime Jennings called their ongoing First Friday event Denver Made, they meant it. The monthly art-and-fashion party has become an essential part of South Broadway's burgeoning First Friday celebration — and, as the name implies, it's obsessed with promoting Denver artists and Denver pride.

"It's basically a way for us to showcase a lot of different creative types in Denver," says Brown. "We call it a trunk show, but it features fashion designers, stationery designers, jewelry makers, DJs. Definitely it leans toward the fashion and style element, but since we like music so much, we're also starting to host DJs and live music, as well." This time around, Fancy Tiger Clothing will host a show titled Fancy Creature, by local artist Samuel Schimek. Notes Brown, "There will be some paintings by him and some found objects that he shellacs with acrylic paint. He really takes them to another level." Also appearing will be local avant-folk trio Laura Goldhamer and the Silver Nail plus plenty of refreshments, including a few of the hoppy variety, courtesy of the event's sponsor, Great Divide Brewery.

Across the street the same night, Fancy Tiger Clothing's sister store, Fancy Tiger Crafts, will host its own special event: a release party for a new book focused on the alternative crafts movement titled Yarn Bombing, by Mandy Moore and Leanne Prain. "It's about the art of crochet and knit graffiti — cozies on light poles and things like that,” explains Brown. “It talks about this phenomenon all over the country." The Vancouver-based authors won't appear at the event, but one of the book's featured yarn-bombing groups, the Denver-based Ladies Fancywork Society, will show up — "probably in masks" — to sign the book and give out free crocheted gifts with its purchase. Fancy Tiger Clothing is at 1 South Broadway, and Fancy Tiger Crafts is at 14 South Broadway; call 303-733-3855 or 303-282-6590 or visit www.fancytiger.com for more info.
