Word Doctors

Woe is the unpublished author who doesn’t ask for help.

Hey there, Unpublished Fiction Writer. Yeah, you with the vintage typewriter and dog-eared copy of Robert Brewer’s 2009 Writer’s Market: Whatsa matter, pal? Got more rejection letters than pages in that manuscript? Having nightmares where everyone in your life says, “It’s not right for me,” even out of context? What you need is some firsthand advice from notable locals who’ve been there and done that. And by “that,” I mean “been published.” You need to attend today’s 7:30 p.m. Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Writer of the Year Panel Discussion at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street.

“A lot of newer writers attend, and they’re kind of hungry for that key into how you get published,” says Betsy Dornbusch, RMFW’s vice president and avid sympathizer of unseasoned authors. The key, dear Unpublished Fiction Writer, lies with the experience and knowledge of moderator Jeanne Stein and panelists Mario Acevedo, Pamela Nowak and Kay Bergstrom, who will provide an inside look at the writing and publishing processes, as well as the benefits of RMFW membership.

“They’re all longtime members of RMFW,” adds Dornbusch, “and they’re really good at talking specifically about how it helped them — critique groups and going to classes and making those connections and networking.”

And if all that doesn’t help, there are always the door prizes: free registration for the 26th annual Colorado Gold Writers Conference (a $275 value) and a one-on-one sit-down with an editor or agent. Sweet. Get more information at www.rmfw.org or by calling 303-331-2608.
