A Big Deal

What artist wouldn't want to see his work up in lights on a 26-by-70-foot billboard for all to see? Not too many. Local draftsman Bill Amundson is the latest artist to be commissioned by the Denver Theatre District to create a billboard-sized piece for display in the downtown area. He'll preview his gargantuan work, "It's Alive (and powered by culture)," at the latest Denver Theatre District Art Salon, tonight in the tony 41st-floor SkyClub confines of the Spire, 891 14th Street.

"It's like a juggernaut or behemoth of culture, a giant machine, big-face, user-friendly, bad-kid kind of thing," Amundson says of the work with a "Big Daddy Roth look" that offers his industriously detailed — and wildly subjective — view of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, replete with galleria, Boteros and even a borrowed big blue bear from the neighboring Colorado Convention Center. "It's no pretentious fine-art thing," he adds. "Something I'd do as a sixth- or seventh-grader."

Meet Amundson and learn more about his style over food and drink beginning at 5 p.m.; admission is free. Get information at www.denvertheatredistrict.com.
