Good for Laughs

Originally from Longmont, humorist Kirsten Schaal returns for a set.

Cute, quirky and unmistakably unique, Kirsten Schaal has a face you don't forget. Of course, it also helps that the ubiquitous actor and comedian has appeared in dozens of TV shows, films and commercials—though she's best known as the Senior Women's Issues Commentator on The Daily Show and as Mel, the band groupie from hell, on HBO's massively popular Flight of the Conchords.

A handful of Coloradans, however, might recognize her as a face around town: Schaal grew up in rural Longmont, a fact she poked fun at during a Daily Show report in July. And while she's now an urbane New Yorker hitched to a swiftly rising star — she'll have a role in the upcoming film The Vampire's Assistant and is co-writing a romance novel with her boyfriend, Daily Show writer Rich Blomquist — the funny lady is returning to her home state to perform a standup set at the Boulder Theater. Expect plenty of her dry, absurdist yet likably warm comedy. Headlining the show is lauded comic (and Mr. Show alumnus) Paul F. Tompkins, the buck-toothed and mind-meltingly hilarious host of VH1's media roast, Best Week Ever. The pair is sure to leave no laugh unturned — or bizarre leap of logic unlaunched.

Tompkins and Schaal will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Boulder Theater (2032 14th Street, Boulder, 303-786-7030). Admission to the all-ages show is $25 to $32; for tickets and info, visit www.bouldertheater.com.
Sat., Sept. 12, 9 p.m., 2009
