Let’s Talk About It

Fall Logan Lectures series gets under way.

Earlier this year, curator Christoph Heinrich undertook a major reinstallation of the Denver Art Museum’s Modern and Contemporary collection. The result, dubbed Focus: The Figure, is in the Hamilton Building. For the 2009 Logan Lectures, sponsored by Vicki and Kent Logan and the DAM Contemporaries, Heinrich invited artists whose work is included to explain themselves. The first half of the series was presented last spring; the second half starts tonight, when Richard Patterson takes the podium.

A British artist, one of the so-called YBAs (Young British Artists), Patterson emerged in the 1990s as an art star, with the DAM being one of the first museums in this country to acquire his work. His style combines references to pop art with witty comments on abstract expressionism thrown in for good measure. “It’s great to have Patterson speak about his work, which is so exuberant in color and form,” notes Heinrich.

One of Patterson’s five paintings at the DAM is Minotaur With Brushstrokes, a photo-realist rendition of a green plastic figure that recedes into the background, with depictions of monumental multi-color brushstrokes right at the surface of the picture plane.

Patterson will begin tonight at 7 p.m. in the Sharp Auditorium on the lower level of the Hamilton, at West 13th Avenue and Acoma Plaza. Tickets are $8 for students, $12 for DAM Contemporaries members, $15 for museum members and $18 for the general public. For more information, call 720-913-0150 or go to www.denverartmuseum.org.
Wed., Sept. 16, 7 p.m., 2009
