The House Always Wins

American Casino attempts to deconstruct the subprime-loan disaster.

Can anyone out there tell me exactly what the hell happened with this whole subprime-loan fiasco that apparently completely screwed up the economy and led to $12 trillion and counting of our hard-earned American dollars disappearing into the bottomless coffers of Wall Street? Anyone? Because all I’ve heard on the topic is a bunch of talking heads going on about greedy people trying to live beyond their means — and sorry, Rush Limbaugh, but I’m not sure that “white guilt” is a viable explanation for this clusterfuck in which we’ve found ourselves. Michael Moore has an answer in the form of a film to be released October 2 — Capitalism: A Love Story. But you don’t have to wait that long; another film addressing the subject, American Casino, opens today at Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli.

“I think the filmmakers came in at a really interesting point in their filmmaking, when all of this was going on, to sort of capture that moment in a bottle and give a little bit of explanation as to what did happen and why it happened,” says Starz programming director Keith Garcia.

American Casino screens at 5 and 7:45 p.m. today, then runs through September 17; tickets are $6 to $9.50. Visit www.denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456.
