On Your Marks

Pre-ski in your armchairs before you hit the slopes.

If you ski, you know the drill: The minute the days begin to grow shorter and a chill begins to frost the evenings, you can think of nothing else, even if you’re rational enough to understand that it takes a while for snow to accumulate on the hills. That’s why ski films were invented: to keep you entertained — and inspired! — until the powder’s thick and gorgeous. Schuss into the ski-film season tonight, when the mogul moguls at Matchstick Productions premiere their 2009 HD thriller, In Deep: The Skiing Experience — which features a list too long to repeat of some of the world’s best skiers, all filmed on location on slopes across the nation and around the world — at the Boulder Theater. That said, this year’s MSP cinema on the slopes promises to be awesome: “We had great weather, great snow, and we were able to ski everything we wanted to, which usually never happens,” notes Canadian skier Eric Hjorliefson, who appears in the film.

Not just a screening, the event is also a party, with drawings, giveaways and a Saucer Boy costume contest, in memory of the late MSP skier Shane McConkey; doors open at 6 and 8:30 p.m. for screenings at 7 and 9:30. Purchase tickets, $15, at www.bouldertheater.com or call 303-786-7030. In Deep will also be shown at the Gothic Theatre on September 24; call 303-788-0984 for details.
Sat., Sept. 19, 7 & 9:30 p.m., 2009
