He’s Laughing at You

Making a list of David Cross's enemies might be easier than making a list of his friends. Never afraid to ruffle feathers or start feuds, the notoriously ribald comic has lobbed bombs at everyone from Larry the Cable Guy to Inside the Actors Studio host James Lipton, not to mention amputee drummers and gay dudes ordering pizza. Oh, and he's been known to envision the Virgin Mary as a rapist. So why is he so lovable? Chalk it up to ubiquity: Since making a splash in the early ’90s as an Emmy-winning writer for The Ben Stiller Show, Cross and partner-in-jibe Bob Odenkirk practically apotheosized the genre of surreal sketch comedy with the toweringly hilarious Mr. Show, as well as appearing in dozens of movies and TV shows, portraying the entendre-dropping Tobias Fünke in Arrested Development and releasing Shut Up You Fucking Baby!,one of the decade's meanest yet funniest comedy albums.

Cross will make two Denver appearances today: First he'll read from and sign copies of his debut book of comedic rants and ephemera, I Drink for a Reason, at noon at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street. Then at 8 p.m., he'll take the Paramount Theatre stage to deliver the laughs. Admission to the signing is free; tickets to the performance are $35. For info about the Tattered Cover event, call 303-436-1070 or visit www.tatteredcover.com; for the Paramount show, call 303-623-0106 or visit www.paramountdenver.com.
Tue., Sept. 29, 8 p.m., 2009
