Reading the Canvas

Books and painting share equal space in the heart of Arts at Denver gallery owner Paula Colette Conley, and the venue’s current exhibit, Cover Art, is the direct result of those twin affections: a series of paintings inspired by literature. “I truly do love books just as much as I love painting. I thought it would be fun to have [the artists] be inspired by the written word instead of what they’re looking at,” Conley explains. “The fun of it is they had to pick something they liked.” Conley asked artists to contribute works based on their favorite parts of their favorite books, whether it was the main theme or simply a paragraph or two.

The chosen tomes range from hallowed classics such as Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass to contemporary favorites like Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer. The resulting paintings — done in oil, watercolor and acrylic, in a variety of styles — include one lovely To Kill a Mockingbird-inspired image that ties in nicely with the city’s One Book, One Denver program.

The show starts with a reception on September 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. and runs through October 11 at Arts at Denver, 1025 South Gaylord Street. For more info, including a sneak peek at most of the paintings on display, visit www.artsatdenver.com or call 303-722-0422.
