Story Time

Fans of Stories on Stage already know and love the format: A collection of prominent actors, some local and some national, take to the stage for dramatic readings from literature, all chosen with a specific theme in mind. And they also know how well it really works. There’s a little magic that happens at every SOS session: Well-drawn characters are brought to life, tears fall, laughter erupts, and the writers’ intentions are realized in perfect clarity.

If you like books and you like theater, you’ll be happy to know that the SOS season is starting with a pleasant little bang. It’s an intimate “Out of the Box” presentation called Nobody Likes a Smartass, with stories by Lorrie Moore, Tobias Wolfe and Flannery O’Connor, read by Rachel Fowler, Frank Corrado and Lauren Klein. Smartass takes place in the Jones Theatre, Denver Performing Arts Complex, with shows at 5 and 8 p.m. But it will also include a fine twist in the plot: In collaboration with the Lighthouse Writers Workshop in Denver, SOS’s fourth offering tonight will pair a surprise guest reader with the prize-winning work from a Lighthouse short story contest.

Admission to tonight’s show is $25; for tickets, go to www.storiesonstage.org or call 303-494-0523.
Sat., Sept. 26, 5 & 8 p.m., 2009
