Ear Today, Ear Tomorrow

If you really love music, those cheap computer speakers and hand-me-down dorm stereos just don’t cut it; you need serious gear. Time to head to the sixth annual Rocky Mountain Audio Fest to see — and, more important, hear — the newest electronic gizmos from more than 300 manufacturers. More than 150 hotel rooms have been converted into listening stations, and you’re invited to come with your favorite tunes, in any format, so that you can hear what they’re supposed to sound like. “Bring a song or two that you really know, on whatever media, and listen to it on different systems,” says director Marjorie Baumert. “You’ll hear wonderful new things. That’s the best seller.”

Portable aficionados will be glad to learn that the biggest room is dedicated to the best in headphones; home-theater systems will also be represented. And the fest is not just for the idle rich; Baumert promises that the gear being shown will range from “the affordable to the absurd.” And the price of admission ($10 for a day, $25 for the weekend, seniors and students half off) buys you the chance to catch musical performances and attend seminars on everything from how to digitize your collection to the physics of audio.

The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest starts today at noon and goes through Sunday at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, 4900 South Syracuse Street; for more information, visit www.audiofest.net or call 303-393-7918.
Fri., Oct. 2, 12-6 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 3, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun., Oct. 4, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., 2009
