This Old House

Denver’s Old House Society offers walking tours that take people into old parts of the city that are completely new to them. “They’re fun, and they’re geared toward someone who doesn’t have a degree in architecture and history — even though when we plan our tours, an architect and a historian are generally amongst us,” explains Elizabeth Wheeler. “People also like the fact that we have refreshments afterward, because it gives them an opportunity to visit with others.”

The current tour, which is designed for all ages and physical ability levels, is focused on the Harkness Heights neighborhood in northwest Denver. “It’s a good example of houses during the Arts and Crafts era,” Wheeler says, adding that the collection comprises bungalows, cottages and Denver Squares.

The tour starts at 1 p.m. today at the Denver Victorian Playhouse, 4201 Hooker Street, and runs until 3 p.m.; afterward, refreshments will be served in the Playhouse’s rose garden, and northwest Denver natives Dennis Gallagher and Duchess Iacino Scheitler will share their memories. Tickets are $10; pre-register by calling 303-916-4359 or visit http://denversoldhousesociety.org.
