Are you Westword's new pot critic?

Some lucky writer is waiting to inhale in the really Mile High City

Is this the most attention you've ever gotten?" asked the national reporter.

Westword got bomb threats when we broke the news about University of Colorado coach Bill McCartney's daughter being pregnant by dying quarterback Sal Aunese, a story that's gotten a second life on ESPN now that their son is a college quarterback. We won national awards for our investigation of the Rocky Flats grand jury. USA Today cited Westword's "The Rumor About Romer" when former governor Roy Romer, then the chair of the Democratic National Committee, got caught in a lengthy lip lock with an aide he'd denied having an affair with years before. Our coverage of the sex scandal at the Air Force Academy inspired several federal investigations.

And yet...all those journalistic scoops are just so much smoke compared to the attention attracted by an ad we posted on the web last week — for a medical marijuana dispensary reviewer. Denver is the wild, wild West of the medical marijuana business, with new dispensaries opening daily — but the staffer who'd been posting "Mile High and Low" reviews every week for the past month under the name Mae Coleman (an homage to Reefer Madness) was ready to get back to his day job. Still, since the number of people seeking medical marijuana cards is growing even faster than the number of dispensaries in this state, we knew that not only was there a need for critical information, but that we'd have no shortage of qualified applicants. Not in the Mile High City. So we published a post asking would-be dispensary critics to write a brief essay on "What Marijuana Means to Me."

Our first applicant replied within five minutes — fast work for a stoner. Our first media response came a few minutes later — really fast work for a journalist.

A week later, our quest has been captured by everyone from the Wall Street Journal to the New York Times, and the essays continue to pour in — some silly, some actually spelled correctly (many potheads don't seem to care for punctuation), some very sincere. A sampling:

From an engineer who started with the great line "Hey, Joe, whatcha doin with that doob in your hand...What Mary Jane means to me: As a 'burner' of more than 14 years, I have spent many an hour pondering the importance of herb in my life... among other things. Recently, however, I have realized a new herbal importance to my overall quality of life. I am an outdoor sporting enthusiast and have experienced my share of injuries throughout the years, as many of us do. As I have aged (elegantly, damnit!), I have developed a couple of recurring conditions that have allowed me to legally indulge myself as an alternative to prescribed narcotics and the dangerous longterm effects. Long story short... (TOO LATE!) I have been frequenting many of our local dispensaries with mixed experiences. Most places are kind and professional. Others, though, are simply drug dealers that check your ID. I think that you have a great idea — a service, rather, that will help your readers make educated decisions and enjoy their 'medication' experience to the fullest..."

"marijuana. what it means to me has changed over the years. smoking scwagg when i was 14 just because it was 'cool'. finding kind bud when i was 17. and then. graduating high school, getting a job, and also graduating to narcotics. i was a heroin addict in pennsylvania when i was 19. i left marijuana behind. when i got clean, 6 years ago, i started smoking again. marijuana is my alternative to taking pills for anxiety and depression. it has never let me down. never made me want to rob a bank. never put me in a situation where i felt compelled to prostitute myself. i received my license in march. since then i have been to 7 dispensaries. i have sampled over 100 strains, edibles, and hash and. i have had issues with each dispensary...i am a good writer. the one thing i know that i excel at. i am also a daily weed smoker who visits dispensaries 2 -3 times weekly. i'm glad you guys are doing this. mm in colorado is exploding. i am a stay at home dad. i don't need money. i don't need a job. but. i have wanted to write for westword for so long. and this would be the perfect union. i will get a marijuana leaf/westword tattoo on my forehead to get this gig. and i have no tattoos at all...please. don't make me beg."

"What marijuana means to me: Sure, it was just a way to piss off my parents when I was in high school and my mom would get mad that I ate all the Oreos. Then I turned 18 and wasn't their responsibility anymore, and now we all get along on such a high-er level. Throughout college and my career, I have depended on marijuana for countless reasons. Sometimes I use it to help brainstorm ideas, or deal with mundane tasks, or to ease back pain while sitting at a computer all day. There's also the social enjoyment aspect, and the enlightening conversations I've had with friends, where great ideas are generated and discussed after partaking. Or the laughter! Whether it's laughing at my own stupid stoner moments or those of others, it's high grade amusement all the way! I've been enjoying marijuana for many years, and to now do it legally and buy it from a local wellness center — I just can't get enough! The business is booming in Colorado and I'm looking to get more active in the industry and make a career change to get more involved. As Steve Jobs said it best, 'You've got to find what you love.'"

I want Cannabis Legal so I can get high. And for thirty years I have inhaled. The only thing prohibition has done is stop the Medical, and industy uses for Cannabis not me inhaling. The position of "Weed Critic" will need someone willing to stand up to the DEA, FBI,FDA, AMA, The pharmaceutical companies, and the Drug Cartel. Call me when you want to start. 513-ANY-WEED The Ruler of SinsiNasty I inhale you should too.

Hello, I am writing to apply for your medical marijuana critic position. Even though I live in St. Paul, I am able to travel as I retired this year. Also, I have a brother and family in the Denver area. I have been smoking pot for approximately 25 years. I smoke because I am in chronic pain. I am also "bipolar". Both conditions are greatly lessened by using marijuana. I do not take any other illicit drugs. I recently completed a 30 year career in (IT) computer technology. I am an artist and writer. Please consider this note as a request for application. I am 54 years old, female, single and able to travel. Please reply to my email address. Thanks in advance.

Hi. Great idea on featuring a critic for the marijuana dispensaries. It's an excellent way to boost viewers for your paper while helping out the community. The reviews will help reward dispensaries that provide excellent, professional service and help patients by giving them useful information. Everyone involved wins on this one. Great idea! :) Best wishes, Mr. A

PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL Erin Marcove not with a review but NEWS!! I spoke at the City of Centennial Council Meeting on Oct 19th 2009. I was there to educate the council members on Cannabis as Medicine. Only allowed 5 min. to give 3 years experience of EDUCATION! Which is impossible? I explained how this is a Legitimate Medical Field, and gave them my brief back ground of education. I then gave a very brief and when I say brief I mean brief, education on the Methods of Uses of Cannabis Therapy. Then I explained how important it is not to shut down EXTREEMLY REPITBLE OPERATIONS. Making SAFE ACCESS DIFFICULT for Patients!!! I also let the council know that I have been Reviewing the dispensaries to make sure they are in compliance with the LAW!!! I then was told to finish up!! The DA then replied with they are holding to the Federal Regulations, and we cant change the policy. This response has now jeopardized this dispensary Now this dispensary is in need of more Legal assistance. Not Right! HOW? This puts over 600 patients out of getting SAFE ACCESS to their Medication. WE Cant allow this to start happening across this state with citys and counties not honoring the VOTE OF THE PEOPLE IN THE STATE of COLORADO. HELP! HELP! HELP! Stop this injustice. We the People of the State of Colorado have elected all of the Law Makers in every City and County of Colorado to represent us. As a taxpaying citizen in Colorado if the person we have elected is to make decisions that affect our lives, dont we only want them to be educated upon the issues that they are addressing and making responsible decisions that affect our lives? Medical Marijuana is a legitimate medical field that is on going progressive field of medicine. Through Education, responsible and non-biased opinions is the only way that responsible decisions and policy can be made. Our President is in support of Medical Cannabis Therapy. We the People of Colorado cannot allow uneducated responses to these major issues that affect many disabled members in our communities that our elected Law Makers are not respecting the voted rights of our State... How can a City Council make decisions for others without the appropriate education? This amendment was passed by the voters of Colorado. Why can a county or a city decide that this amendment is not in their best interest? This is a State wide amendment #20. Why does this look like a type of discrimination against a legal passed amendment in Colorado? Certain cities and counties dont want to be associated with Medical Marijuana. If only they really knew how many of their taxpaying citizens in the area are actual patients. So our legislators want our chronically ill patients not to be able to go 3 miles to get their medicine, but to go 40 or more miles to get their medicine. Why is this not an appropriate business in there city or county their taxpaying citizens voted for. That the city will receive tax money from. What is the real problem here?!!! Peace & Love Erin Marcove C.M.T.C. Cannabis Medical Therapeutics Consultant

  • Erin Marcove 10/20/2009 8:11:00 AM

If the President of the United State of America is an advocate for Medical Marijuana, how can our Counties and Cities not honor amendments that were passed through legal means of voting? The Obama administration will not seek to prosecute medical marijuana patients or dispensaries as long as they conform with state law. A 3-page memo was sent Monday to federal prosecutors in the 14 states with medical marijuana laws. In addition, the memo was sent to top officials at the FBI and the DEA. The new policy guidelines tell prosecutors it is "not a good use of their time" to arrest those who are in compliance with state medical marijuana laws. While federal prosecutors will still attempt to arrest those in violation of both federal and state law, there are no details on how that goal will be achieved. The memo stressed to prosecutors discretion when choosing which cases to pursue, saying it is "not a good use" of federal manpower to prosecute those who are in compliance with state law. This is a huge departure from the Bush administration, which insisted on ignoring state laws and continued enforcing federal drug laws. During his campaign, Obama stressed the importance respecting states rights and promised to change policy in situations where state and federal law clash. However shortly after he was elected, the DEA raided four Los Angeles medical dispensaries, creating confusion on where Obama stood on the medical marijuana issue. While the memo does urge prosecutors to pursue marijuana cases which "involve violence, the illegal use of firearms, selling pot to minors, or money laundering," the focus remains on other crimes, not on the sale of medical marijuana. This is the biggest step in a year of huge steps for medical marijuana activists. While Massachusetts and California are working on bills that would make marijuana completely legal, the next best thing is a medical marijuana blessing from the guy in the head office. Funny as hell, and provided important facts; good for one and all. The last guy there, he hit it right in the pocket: what it's all really about is, "what mean to marijuana" and when that force has become strong enough, resistance will cave and in return, the wave will turn to empower and benefit the whole of society. This is the future; look at California, Oregon; for some states, there is no other way to dig themselves out of their economic hole.

A daily smoker of the true sacrament for four decades, I enjoy Colorado's dispensaries. I however, do not trust newspapers. The put-downs and sour humor associated with Cannabis serves to continue the derogation of one slice of humanity. The National religion thanks to these rags amounts to raw hatred. It's been a year and a half since I picked up my last paper. There may never be anything worthwhile in them again. No Free Press - No Free County

This is a very interesting idea, I have been using COLORADOGREENPAGES.NET to get current information about the local dispensaries. I know that the guy doing the leg work for that company could be a contender for this position!

I am a Cannabis Medical Therapeutics Consultant and I have my accreditation from the University of San Francisco school of Medicine. I have also been a user of cannabis for most of my life due to all of my medical conditions. For the last three years I have been working for a Patient collective that helps "Patients helping patients". Now I have been a consultant to the ways medical cannabis therapy affects the human body both mentally and physically. I also have educated law enforcement, social services, legislators, dispensaries and patients. The reason I am writing you now, is that there is a need for a column in your magazine for Medical Cannabis Therapeutics. If you advertise all of the dispensaries I can give reviews on all the dispensaries so patients can educate themselves to all the alternatives of Cannabis Therapy. Not just smoking, but ingesting and letting the user's know of all the risks of each therapies and strains that can have diverse effects to patients. There is so much information on cannabis we all need the right education that guide's the public in the truth of cannabis. Embrace Cannabis as Medicine. Compassionate Medicine, Compassionate Dispensaries!
