Howl-oween Haunt

Teresa Garcia says her father is the oldest practicing veterinarian in Colorado, and although she might be stretching the truth, one thing’s for certain: Dr. Edward Garcia, who loves fixing up platters of tamales and jars of peaches in his spare time, is the Hispanic equivalent of a mensch. The longtime proprietor of the North Metro Animal Hospital, 1050 West 47th Avenue in Sunnyside, has been serving the underserved for decades, offering services for free, by trade or on the installment plan for people who couldn’t afford care for their sick pets anywhere else.

“He’s 78 and can do surgery all day and then go home and roll 100 tamales, but we’re having a heck of a time paying our property taxes,” Ms. Garcia notes. That’s why, after a one-day test run last year, North Metro (and its non-profit wing, Pets 4 People) has given way, lock, stock and rattling barrel, to the Haunted Animal Hospital, a full-blown haunted attraction. The house includes ten rooms of scary exhibits, a pet caricaturist, animal psychics, a dog wash and other amenities for dogs and people in the $10 admission price; it’s open from 5 to 10 Fridays and Saturdays in October (and daily, beginning on October 28), through Halloween.
