Southwest Redux

Not long ago, husband-and-wife Lakewood artists Haze and Jana Diedrich made a pilgrimage to Santa Fe, where they began to appreciate those small objects of Hispanic-Catholic devotion called retablos. These paintings and works on tin, wood or even paper depict Christ, the saints and other religious figures in an unmistakable folk-baroque style. Once the couple returned to Colorado, they developed a synergy between the forms Haze was putting into his paintings and those that Jana was using in her pots, all of it inspired by the elements found in those gorgeous old retablos.

To see how well the Diedrichs did in creating interrelated paintings and ceramics inspired by the retablos while at the same time retaining their own individual styles, see the resulting show, Adoration/Awakenings, at Space Gallery.

“Both Haze and Jana work in the same studio, and they bounce ideas off one another,” says Space director Michael Burnett. “But this is the first time they’ve worked on a theme together.” The show opens with a reception October 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Space Gallery, 765 Santa Fe Drive, and continues through November 28.
