Back in the Galaxy

Since his death in 2001, many of those who loved author Douglas Adams — and I mean adored him with all their hearts — would never, ever accept a sixth installment of his beloved Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, discourteously dashed off by a substitute author, as authentic, no matter how good that author might be. But others, and I suppose I’m one of them, would give anything to swashbuckle through space on new adventures with Arthur Dent again. Anyway, as if you didn’t know, fellow hitchhikers, that has come to pass, in a version sanctioned by Adams’s widow Jane Belson and written by Eoin Colfer, a fantasist in his own right, who’s previously penned a zillion or so Artemis Fowl titles for young readers. Set on, of all places, the planet Earth, And Another Thing... follows Dent on another hysterical journey among lunatic friends and enemies. No matter that this is Colfer’s first book for adults; considering that Adams essentially wrote wonderful books for childlike adults, the match sounds like a keeper.

Give him a chance. Colfer will be in Denver tonight, reading from and signing copies of the book at 7 p.m. at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street, so see if you don’t get hooked. And expect a crowd: Free tickets for the reading and book-signing line have been available since 9 a.m. Thursday with the purchase of the book at any T.C. location; additional tickets will be available in LoDo beginning tonight at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free (copies of the book sell for $25.99); go to www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-436-1070.
