Faces Forward

When fine artist Jenny Morgan last showed work in these parts, the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design grad was all the buzz — young, promising and lauded for her striking self-portraits and multiple canvases spread with cropped nudes. Now she’s back, after a grad-school hiatus at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, with an MFA in her back pocket and a new, full-frontal yet fully calculated visceral style of portraiture to show off. And she’ll do just that in This Too Shall Pass, her first show here since 2007, which opens today at Plus Gallery with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

“I’ve really been anticipating this exhibition,” says Plus owner Ivar Zeile. “You never know where an artist is going to go — if the work will get better and get more challenging and risky.” In this case, it has, in a hyper-real fashion that goes so far as to boldly intimate the actual physical structure beneath the skin of each subject. But there’s even more there to pique Zeile’s interest: “The people depicted in the paintings are either in Denver or have passed through Denver at one time or another, including of couple of current and past artists at the gallery,” he adds. “It’s nice to show work that has a connection to the local audience.”

This Too remains on view at Plus, 2501 Larimer Street, through November 28; get details at www.plusgallery.com or call 303-296-0927.
