No Joke

One of my earliest childhood memories is watching Steve Martin playing banjo on The Muppet Show. (Can you think of a better early memory!?) This was ’77 or ’78, when he had a head of ashy brown hair and his performance was still a fusion of banjo picking and standup comedy. These days, Martin continues to be a multi-talented comedian, writer, director and musician who has expanded his banjo playing from comedic sideshow to a full-on serious pursuit. He hit the road in support of his latest album, The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, following its release this past spring.

The wild and crazy Martin lands in Denver today to perform An Evening of Bluegrass and Banjo at the Paramount Theatre. “He's playing with the Steep Canyon Rangers, and Frank Martin is opening up,” says Sara Williams, marketing director at AEG Live. “The performance you saw on David Letterman is like what he'll be doing at the Paramount.” All of the songs on The Crow were written by Martin.

The show is at 8 p.m. at the Paramount, 1621 Glenarm Place; tickets are $35 to $75. For more information, call 303-623-0106 or go to www.paramountdenver.com.
