Playing the Part

Even bands like to dress up for Halloween. Last October, Boulder funk outfit the Motet picked the Talking Heads as the inspiration for its annual string of tribute concerts — but this time around, the funk will be a bit less tidy. The Motet is taking on the music of Sly & the Family Stone, the epochal ensemble behind such hits as "Dance to the Music," "Everyday People" and "Family Affair."

"Sly is such an incredible songwriter, really fantastic tunes that stand the test of time," says Motet vocalist Jans Ingber, who will be joined on stage by singer/guitarist Gail Muldrow, a member of the Family Stone for a brief stint in the ’70s. "His recordings were so loose and free, with all the warts still on them, which was groundbreaking. We can only hope to do a little justice to the man, his music and his message."

The Motet will get a riot goin' on tonight at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th Street in Boulder, before bringing their Sly show to Denver for a two-night stand at Cervantes' on Friday and Saturday.
