Potcheen

Steel Blue Sea
Self-released

Originally called the Potcheen Folk Band, this outfit has dropped the "folk" from its name, and that makes sense — because while the musicians delve into traditional Irish folk songs like "Foggy Dew" and "Whisky in a Jar," they also use the genre as a foundation to build upon and then toss in rock and punk flavors. Take "Swallow Tail Jig," Steel Blue Sea's opener, for example: It starts off as a bouncy traditional Irish jig, but then takes on more of a rock feel once Scooter Barnes starts shredding on the electric guitar. And on "Drunken Sailor," one of the album's most raucous cuts, the band cruises into Flogging Molly territory and fully lives up to its rep as the Colorado's best Celtic pirate punk rock band.
