High Flying

Recession-bound? Money’s tight? Need cheering up? Dana Cain of the annual Athena Festival, a bubbling cauldron of all things mystical, metaphysical and psychic in our world and other planes, says nothing will make you feel more fantastic than a day of having your cards read, getting a Reiki massage, shopping for candles and crystals and just generally letting your inner-goddess freak flag fly. The only caveat? You have to be able to suspend all belief, which, when you really think about it, is good for you once in a while, especially in these times.

“There’s a vibe,” Cain says of the fest, which takes place today at the Ramada Plaza Convention Center, 10 East 120th Avenue. “Everybody at the festival is so positive and so spiritual. They say that when people are depressed, that’s when tarot readers do well. When your life goes into the crapper, that’s when people start looking for answers.” And answers you’ll find here, including a few you might have about the predicted end of the world. That subject will be thoroughly studied from top to rock-bottom at a "2012: The Real Story" discussion at 1 p.m. on the fest’s main stage among a topnotch panel of astrologers, psychics and other experts.
