Oh, the Horror!

Dario Argento isn’t exactly a practitioner of cinematic restraint. But few films by any director can touch the lurid, phantasmagoric spectacle of Argento's 1977 masterpiece, Suspiria. The Denver Film Society is showing a rare, archival, 35mm print of the horror film, including five minutes of material cut from the original theatrical version, as part of its Witching Hour series.

“In an era of Saw sequels and reboots galore, it's nice to finally show one of the grand staples of horror,” says DFS programming manager Keith Garcia. “Suspiria is perhaps the pinnacle of Argento's career, and for good reason. It's not often that you can call one of the goriest horror films a beautiful, candy-colored work of art."

Suspiria will screen tonight and tomorrow night at 10 p.m. at Starz FilmCenter, in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus; admission is $6.50 to $9. For tickets and info, call 303-595-3456 or visit www.denverfilm.org.
Fri., Nov. 6, 10 p.m.; Sat., Nov. 7, 10 p.m., 2009
