Cool Prospects

Are you cool? Or, more important, do you want to be cool? Author Ted Gioia (author of The History of Jazz and other music-related tomes) thinks maybe you don’t, at least not in the smoldering, back-turned mold of Miles Davis, Bob Dylan or James Dean. Strung throughout with his own understanding of American music lore and its cool-jazz metaphor, Gioia’s newest book, The Birth (and Death) of the Cool (Speck Press, $25) makes the case for a warmer culture where the overused concept of cool has been tossed aside and replaced by more communal interests. Cool or not cool? Think of the conversations this book will spark! Gioia will discuss and sign the book tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover Book Store, 2526 East Colfax Avenue; get more information at www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-322-7727.
